memory card for digital slr camera – was wondering?

Question by just me: memory card for digital slr camera – was wondering?
I bought a new extreme 3 CF memory card 8 GB from amazon.com, for my Nikon D100 – on one of the reviews someone said they were able to get 1000 raw files on it – that’s what sold me on it.

I got it in the mail, put it in my camera and put my settings on raw format – says 400 something frames available – is that the normal quantity for raw files on 8 GB? I was surprised, was expecting 1000.

Thanks!

Answer by jjcox
Raw files take up 2-6x more space than the typical jpeg. So on an 8gb card if you got 600 pictures in jpg expect to get a fraction of that. The biggest advantage to having that card as it is small now is that the read and write speed is faster than standard cards. That means the info gets on and off the card much quicker.

Are SLR digital cameras cheaper in US than Japan?

Question by Meifa: Are SLR digital cameras cheaper in US than Japan?
Hi!
I am interested in buying a Pentax K10D digital SLR camera body.
Since I will be travelling around in the near future, I was looking for prices in different countries:

Amazon in US. $ 650
Amazon in Japan: $ 840

Surprice!! I always thought cameras were chaper in Japan, but it is not? How come?!
The stuff that’s included (batteries charger etc) seem same too.
Is there any additional cost except for postage when buying in US (I want 1-2 delivery to my hotel) ?
How does it work with the tax since the rate varies with state in US?

If anybody have experience comparing the prices US vs Japan, or experience in buying cameras online in US, I am very interested in knowing more!
(…or does anybody know a good camera shop in Chicago?)
FYI, I will be travelling to both places to I will only need to pay domestic postage fee!

What is a good beginner digital SLR camera?

Question by Jay: What is a good beginner digital SLR camera?
I am looking for the best Digital SLR for something under 500$ . I know it is a tight budget but it is the best I got.

Something easy to use with good oppertunity for attatchable lenses.

Best answer:

Answer by Alex
Well, under $ 500 is certainly tight for a DSLR. However, if you were willing to spend $ 630, not much more, you could buy Canon’s Digital Rebel XTi new off Costco.com, however if you don’t have a membership there, that’s not much use. Try looking on websites like http://www.bhphotovideo.com, or other websites you can get recommended.

Please don’t go to google and type in “Cheap SLR’s” because you can get so scammed on some of those sites. Some of them aren’t even real. As one person already said, tax-free does not mean hassle-free. In other words, pay more, play it safe. BestBuy.com is a good one, however I can’t guarantee anything cheap there either. You could try Amazon.com or if you want, eBay.com But once again I recommend Costco (if you have membership) or BestBuy, CircuitCity, or other businesses that YOU KNOW OF.

But if you could find anything in Canon’s Rebel series (preferrably the XTi or XSi) then those are great, user-friendly DSLR’s. My first ever DSLR was the XTi, and I still use it now. It’s excellent.

Q&A: what is the difference between a digital camera and an SLR?

Question by omg_maritza: what is the difference between a digital camera and an SLR?
I’m looking into buying an expensive camera and I noticed for nikon they offer a 12-megapixel digital camera for $ 100 dollars less then a 10.2-megapixel SLR camera.

Since I am Pretty much a camera newbie and really only know the higher the megapixel the better the picture, so my question is what is the difference between the two that I am missing here.

Which do you believe is the better buy?

Best answer:

Answer by Brandon
the digital camera stores all the pictures on a memory card hence the name “digital”
while the SLR is like a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) but without the digital which means it uses the film which you have to go to the store and get it developed
DSLR’s and SLR’s take very good pictures
so , if my assumption about the digital camera being a compact camera is correct, you should get better pictures with the SLR , but remember you have to get it developed, so you won’t be able to put it on your computer or anything

Can you analyse/help improve this personal statement? It’s for an Art and Design Foundation Diploma?

Question by : Can you analyse/help improve this personal statement? It’s for an Art and Design Foundation Diploma?
Growing up I have been inspired by many aspects of potential career opportunities from policing to skiing instructing, but my heart lies with art and design. As a young child I was influenced by an artistic upbringing, on a typical afternoon my family and I would create paper maché balloons and decorate them the next day with paints. Together we’d create cards for Birthdays, Christmas and Easter for friends and family, although at the time, I’d just enjoy the thrill of it like most small children would. But, as I grew older, I started to appreciate different styles of art, from photography to relief forms and even films, which is another passion of mine.
Taking GCSE Art at school was just one step of many for me, but I felt we just touched the surface of the most popular forms of art, so I decided to take them further and I began to stay behind after school to experiment with different medias with my art teacher. My most memorable moment was producing print after print of monoprints; I loved not knowing how your design would turn out and the anticipation that arose whilst peeling back the paper to reveal it was great. Along with Art I was also part of the crew for Global Rock Challenge, a popular dance competition that my school entered annually, as part of the crew, I’d help design and create the set required for the stage performance. My favourite year was when our theme was ‘Inspiring Artists’, which consisted of Andy Warhol, Edgar Degas, L S Lowry, Edvard Munch and Pablo Picasso, myself and the rest of the crew hand painted each set design, which was a copy of one of the artist’s most inspiring pieces, was such fun in emulating.
After leaving school I started at Barton Peveril College and took Art Graphics as one of my subjects, within a few months of the course I knew that I wanted to continue learning about this course or something similar in university. One of the coursework projects was to produce a clothes tag and t-shirt logo design, this I enjoyed thoroughly as I really got l into the concept of producing a clothes company’s label. On this course, I was introduced to Photoshop, something I had never experienced before, yet it was an exciting event. Throughout the year my confidence in using Photoshop to create some of my projects grew significantly, and I became confident enough to produce pieces solely on Photoshop.
Moving onto my second year at college, as well continuing Art Graphics I took up an AS Digital Photography course where we learnt the ins and outs of how to use our Digital SLR Cameras to the best of its ability. With Digital Photography and Art Graphics I started to combine my knowledge of both to advantage myself in each subject.
I believe that studying an Art and Design Foundation Diploma will broaden my knowledge even more so, as I consider that this course will be the most important year of my studies so far. At present, I am not one hundred percent confident in what course I would like study at University and this is another reason why I would like to apply for this course as I know at the end of it I will discover which course I would wish to study.
Other than art my other hobbies include going to the cinema, as I am also a Film Studies student, and I feel that film is another form of art with the cinematography, set design, lighting and art direction. I really appreciate a quality film and I have many films that I love to watch and just to name a few; Amélie, The Girl With The Pearl Earring and Let The Right One In. I also love to ski and in my free time I enjoy going to Southampton Sport Centre’s Dry Ski Slope and I often go to the Swiss Alps too. I believe that my personal qualities are that I am congenial as I can work well with others yet I can also work very well on my own. Competent, as I can meet deadlines without a last minute rush and I feel that I am persistent as I can stick to a task set even if I feel that my enthusiasm has dwindled.

Here’s an interesting idea — if it’s for an Art & Design degree, I’d say include some of your own artwork INSIDE the essay. Art & Design programs love to see students thinking outside the box!

You could bring some of your artwork into Microsoft Word, change the transparency and use it as a background for the essay (just make sure it’s still very readable!)

Tips:
1. take out the “but” in “But, as I grew older…” — just keep it as “As I grew older…”
2. Take out “I’m not 100% confident….” (towards the end) They want to see POSITIVE not NEGATIVE sentiments.
3. In all the cases where you say “I believe” – change it to “I know” (shows confidence).
4. Make sure you either underline or italicize (or both) the names of the movies you are referring to.

Other good tips can be found here: http://www.unigo.com/articles/stand_out_on_your_college_applications%5E58_8_crucial_steps/?taxonomyId=695812

Ok! Have fun with that!

What Camera should I buy, Nikon D40x SLR Digital Camera Kit W/ 18-55mm Lens or the Canon Digital Rebel XT?

The Nikon is a great camera but I went with the Rebel XTi. It was less money, and for me, just as good.

You will find people in both camps but it’s hard to beat the Canon Rebel line and it’s performance.

Question by Michael H: What is the average digital camera price?
I need one for college and I want to know the average price

Best answer:

Answer by too smart
$ 200.00 to $ 300.00 is average for a really nice camera with special features and everything else. But there are cameras out there for $ 150 that are also good quality. I recommend Olympus cameras, they are long lasting and one of the best in camera specifically.
